Stepping Into the Sun: Penny's Adventurous Senior Session

Some photo sessions come with surprises—and this one brought plenty. Penny’s senior portraits took us on a two-day adventure full of unexpected challenges, new experiences, and unforgettable beauty.
We started in the cozy charm of Gate City Coffee, a place I’ve always loved for its warm tones and artistic vibe. Shooting indoors brought its own creative energy, and Penny’s relaxed smile made the café glow even more. From there, we stepped outside into the colorful alleys of Old Town Pocatello, where vibrant murals became the perfect backdrop for Penny’s bold and fun personality.
But the real surprise came at Lookout Point. What was supposed to be a golden sunset turned into a mix of wild wind, heavy clouds, and cold air. Every photo felt earned. And yet, there was something beautiful about embracing that unpredictability. It reminded me that sometimes the best moments come when things don't go perfectly.
The next day, we met at Pebble Creek Ski Area in Inkom. This time, the sun was blazing—bright, hot, and unapologetic. I usually chase the shade for portraits, preferring the soft, filtered light it gives. But this time? I leaned in. The sun lit up the hillside, the flowers, and Penny in a way that felt pure magic. The wildflowers danced in the golden hour light, and Penny absolutely shined.
This session was more than a set of portraits—it was a personal growth moment for me as a photographer. I was pushed out of my comfort zone, challenged by the elements, and rewarded with images I truly love. Penny’s joy, the natural beauty of Idaho, and the unexpected light all came together to create something special.
It’s sessions like this that remind me why I do what I do. Thank you, Penny, for the adventure—and for trusting me with your senior story.
